5 Tips to Save on Your Electric Bill This Summer

06 Aug 5 Tips to Save on Your Electric Bill This Summer

Hey friends! We hope you have been enjoying all the fun-in-the-sun activities with your friends and families the past couple of months because we sure have. Whether you’ve spent time this summer enjoying picnics, vacations, catching fireflies, swimming or just spending time with the kids outdoors, summer is arguably the most enjoyable season of the year for many people – unless your electricity bill is skyrocketing!

Luckily, Mister Sparky is an expert on the subject, and we’re here to help you out! Check out these 5 tips to help you save on your electric bill this summer so you don’t break the bank!

1) Turn It Up! (The thermostat)
Turning up your thermostat to the 76-78 degree range when you’re home is a very effective way to save on electricity since you’re A/C unit doesn’t have to work as hard at cooling. To keep cool, turn the ceiling fan to high! You’ll be just as cool. Don’t forget to turn your A/C off when you leave the house! You won’t be there so why spend the money cooling an empty house?

2) Out With the Old, In With the New
Is your house lit with those extremely hot and yellowish incandescent bulbs? If so, it’s time to replace them! Compact 13 watt fluorescent lamp (CFL) bulbs are a better option. They use 78% less energy than incandescent bulbs. When you break that down, that means five CFL bulbs could be powered with the energy that one incandescent bulb uses. CFLs may be a little more expensive up front than incandescent bulbs, but you will save money in the long run.

3) Stay On Time (We’re talking to your appliances)
This next tip expands on the first tip. We know lots of you are going to forget to manually turn off your A/C before leaving the house. If you tend to be forgetful, buy an appliance timer. Appliance timers may be set to turn your A/C on or off at certain times of the day depending on your family’s work schedule. This way when you come home, it will feel as if it’s been cooled all day when really you just had the A/C kick on at the time you normally start your commute back home from work. Comfort and savings?! Yep.

4) Three Words – SmartStrip Power Strips
If you’re like most Americans, you have your Blu-Ray player, TV, Apple TV, game console and surround sound system plugged into one power strip. This is called a phantom load since this causes a continuous drain of low-level energy. Unplug it! Get smart about this – you need a SmartStrip power strip instead. The Department of Energy estimates that phantom loads waste 43 billion kWh a year, but with a SmartStrip you can lower than number. SmartStrips are able to cut power from any devices when they aren’t in use.

5) Buy ENERGY STAR Electronics!
Before you go out and splurge on a new HD TV or computer, make sure they are qualified by ENERGY STAR. ENERGY STAR qualified electronics use close to 30% less energy than other conventional products.

So there you have it. You’re set for summer savings now!
